Will NEET 2027 Be Held in Multiple Shifts? What We Know So Far

Short answer: NTA has not announced it yet. As of 13 October 2026, no official notice says whether NEET 2027 will run in one shift or several. But the government has said NEET is moving to a computer-based test (CBT), and if that happens, NEET 2027 will almost certainly be held in multiple shifts over five to six days. More than 22 lakh candidates cannot sit one computer-based shift at the same time.

So, will NEET 2027 be held in multiple shifts? It depends on one decision: CBT or pen-and-paper. This page explains what has been said, why CBT forces multiple shifts, how normalization would work, and what you should do now. For the full news trail, read the latest NEET 2027 CBT news and our check on whether NEET 2027 CBT is confirmed.

Will NEET 2027 Be Held in Multiple Shifts? The Two Scenarios

If NEET 2027 is…ShiftsExam daysNormalization
Pen-and-paper (OMR), as in every year so farOne shiftOne dayNot needed
Computer-based (CBT), as currently plannedMultiple shifts, likely two a dayAbout five to six daysAlmost certainly needed

Every NEET-UG so far has been a single-shift, single-day OMR exam, which is why this is the first year students are asking about shifts at all. If NEET 2027 stays pen-and-paper, expect one sitting around the first Sunday of May; our NEET 2027 exam date page tracks the schedule. If it moves online, see our comparison of NEET 2027 OMR vs CBT and our guide on attempting NEET on a computer.

Whichever format NTA picks, the questions will come from the same NCERT chapters. You can solve chapter-wise NEET PYQs for free while NTA decides, starting with Molecular Basis of Inheritance.

What Has Been Said So Far

DateDevelopment
15 May 2026After the 3 May exam was cancelled, the Education Ministry announced plans to make NEET computer-based from 2027
29 May 2026NTA told the Supreme Court it would move NEET to CBT from the next cycle
4 September 2026NTA asked AICTE to help identify government institutions as CBT test centres
14 September 2026NTA Director General: “NEET will also be moving to CBT very soon”
18 September 2026The Centre told the Supreme Court that CBT is “under active consideration”; a task force led by Nandan Nilekani is studying it
2 October 2026A ministry review of NEET 2027 readiness; reports describe about 5 lakh candidates a day, around 1,000 centres in about 500 cities, over five to six days

Notice what is missing: none of these is an official shift schedule. The centre plan is covered in our article on NEET 2027 CBT exam centres. The reported plan of five to six NEET 2027 exam days only makes sense with multiple shifts, but NTA will confirm the shift timings only in the information bulletin.

Why NEET 2027 CBT Means Multiple Shifts

The numbers make the case on their own:

FigureValue
Candidates who sat NEET 2026About 22.7 lakh
NTA’s current CBT capacity (reported)About 1.5 lakh per shift
Planned capacity for NEET 2027 (reported)About 5 lakh per day
Days needed at 5 lakh a dayAt least five
Likely shifts at two a dayAbout 10 to 12

A pen-and-paper exam only needs a desk and an OMR sheet, so lakhs of students can write it at the same hour. A NEET 2027 CBT needs one working computer per candidate, and India does not have 22 lakh secure exam computers free on one morning. So the exam has to be spread across days and shifts.

None of this changes what you study. Whatever the shift, previous year questions remain the best guide to what NTA asks.

What Multiple Shifts Would Mean for You

Different papers in different shifts

Each shift would get a different question paper of the same pattern: 180 compulsory questions, 720 marks, 180 minutes, +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. NTA sets the papers to be of similar difficulty, but no two papers are ever exactly equal.

NEET 2027 normalization

To make scores fair across shifts, NTA would likely use NEET 2027 normalization, as it does for JEE Main. Your raw marks are converted into a percentile within your own shift:

Percentile = 100 × (candidates in your shift with a raw score equal to or below yours) ÷ (total candidates in your shift)

So if your shift’s paper was harder, everyone in it scores lower, and your percentile protects you. The merit list is then built on these percentiles. Our guide to the NEET 2027 normalization formula works through examples.

Shift allotment

You would not choose your shift. In NTA’s other CBT exams, shift allotment is done by NTA, and your city intimation slip and admit card show your date, shift and reporting time. Expect the same for NEET 2027 if it goes to CBT.

Exam day itself

The paper would be on a screen: you click an option, mark questions for review, and move between sections with a question palette. Rough work would be done on sheets given at the centre.

How NTA Runs Shifts in JEE Main

JEE Main is the closest model, because NTA already runs it as a multi-shift CBT:

FeatureJEE Main (current practice)NEET 2027 if CBT (expected)
Shifts per dayTwo (morning and afternoon)Likely two
Days per sessionAbout sixFive to six (reported)
Different paper per shiftYesYes
Score used for rankingNTA percentile after normalizationLikely percentile after normalization
Shift chosen by candidateNoLikely no

JEE Main 2027 session 1 is scheduled for 22–30 January 2027, again in multiple shifts. If NEET 2027 follows the same model, the NEET result would also show a percentile, not just raw marks.

Is a Multi-Shift NEET Fair?

Common worryWhat actually happens
“My shift might get a harder paper.”Normalization adjusts for this by ranking you within your own shift.
“Later shifts will know the questions.”Each shift gets a different paper, and papers reach centres encrypted.
“Raw marks will not matter.”They still matter: a higher raw score always gives a higher percentile within your shift.
“Morning shifts are better.”There is no evidence that any shift time gives an advantage.

Normalization is not perfect, and some students and experts have raised concerns about using it for a medical entrance exam. That is one reason the final decision is taking time.

When Will We Know for Sure?

Reports in October 2026 suggest the official NEET 2027 notification is likely between November 2026 and January 2027. The information bulletin will finally answer whether NEET 2027 will be held in multiple shifts, along with the mode, the number of NEET 2027 exam days, shift timings and whether normalization applies. Until then, the exam is expected in early May 2027, and if it is held in multiple shifts, the window will stretch over several days rather than one Sunday.

What You Should Do Now

  1. Prepare for both formats. Keep some OMR practice, but take at least one full mock a week on a screen.
  2. Practise in the shift timings. Do some full mocks from 9 am to 12 pm and some from 3 pm to 6 pm, so neither slot feels unusual.
  3. Do not chase “easy shift” rumours. You cannot pick your shift, and normalization removes most of the gap.
  4. Keep solving previous year questions. The syllabus and pattern do not change with the shift.

Conclusion

Will NEET 2027 be held in multiple shifts? Nothing is official yet, but if NEET 2027 moves to CBT as planned, multiple shifts over about five to six days are almost certain, with normalization to keep scores fair. If it stays pen-and-paper, it will remain a single-shift exam. Prepare for both: practise on screen every week, get used to both shift timings, and keep your PYQ practice going. This page will be updated as soon as NTA releases the bulletin.

FAQ

Q: Will NEET 2027 be held in multiple shifts?
A: NTA has not confirmed it yet. If NEET 2027 is held as a computer-based test, as currently planned, it will very likely run in multiple shifts over about five to six days. If it stays pen-and-paper, it will be a single shift.

Q: How many shifts could NEET 2027 have?
A: Reports mention capacity for about 5 lakh candidates a day over five to six days. With two shifts a day, that would mean roughly 10 to 12 shifts.

Q: Will there be normalization in NEET 2027?
A: If NEET 2027 is held in multiple shifts, normalization is very likely, as in JEE Main. Your raw marks would be converted into a percentile within your own shift.

Q: Can I choose my NEET 2027 shift?
A: Probably not. In NTA’s other CBT exams, NTA allots the date and shift, and they appear on the city intimation slip and admit card.

Q: Will the NEET 2027 syllabus or pattern change because of shifts?
A: No change has been announced. The pattern is expected to stay at 180 compulsory questions for 720 marks in 180 minutes, with +4 and −1 marking.

Q: When will NTA announce the NEET 2027 shift details?
A: In the official information bulletin, which reports suggest may come between November 2026 and January 2027.
