One question is only 4 marks, but think about the effort. You can master the full chapter in two or three focused sessions, and the questions rarely have tricks you cannot predict. Compare that with the NEET 2027 chapter weightage of heavier units, and the return on time is hard to beat.

The chapter also feeds every other unit. Dimensional analysis NEET skills help you check answers in Gravitation, Fluids and Modern Physics. Error propagation shows up again in experimental questions. So the time you spend here pays off across the whole syllabus.

Units and Measurement NEET PYQ Analysis: What Actually Gets Asked

When you sort a decade of NEET physics PYQs from this chapter, almost every question falls into four buckets.

Concept

How often it appears

Typical question style

Dimensional formulas and analysis

Most frequent

Find dimensions of a constant, or check which formula is correct

Errors in measurement

Very frequent

Percentage error in a derived quantity

Significant figures

Regular

Round off a calculated result correctly

Measuring instruments

Occasional

Least count of vernier callipers or screw gauge

Two patterns stand out. First, dimensional questions increasingly use constants from other chapters, like Planck’s constant or permittivity. Second, error questions almost always combine powers, so you must apply the power rule carefully. If you have not yet built a routine for solving previous year papers, set one up before going chapter by chapter.

To see how these topics rank against the rest of the syllabus, check the most repeated NEET topics based on PYQ data.

Concept 1: Dimensional Analysis

This is the heart of the chapter. NTA loves asking for the dimensions of an unfamiliar combination, such as a constant built from G, h and c.

Key facts to memorise:

Planck’s constant and angular momentum share the formula [ML²T⁻¹]

Energy, work and torque all have [ML²T⁻²]

Pressure, stress and energy density all have [ML⁻¹T⁻²]

Dimensionless quantities include strain, angle and refractive index

For faster solving, use our dimensional analysis shortcut tricks. They help you eliminate wrong options in seconds.

Concept 2: Errors in Measurement

Errors in measurement questions follow a single rule. If Q = Aᵃ Bᵇ / Cᶜ, the maximum relative error is:

ΔQ/Q = a(ΔA/A) + b(ΔB/B) + c(ΔC/C)

Notice that the errors always add, even for quantities in the denominator. Most wrong answers come from students subtracting the error for C instead of adding it.

Concept 3: Significant Figures

Significant figures NEET questions test two rules:

Multiplication and division: the answer keeps as many significant figures as the least precise value.

Addition and subtraction: the answer keeps as many decimal places as the value with the fewest decimal places.

Also remember that trailing zeros after a decimal point are significant, while leading zeros are not. So 0.00450 has three significant figures.

Worked PYQ-Pattern Questions

These four questions follow the exact patterns seen in past papers. Try each one before reading the solution.

Q1. Which physical quantity has the same dimensions as Planck’s constant? (a) Linear momentum (b) Angular momentum (c) Energy (d) Power

Answer: (b). From E = hν, h = E/ν = [ML²T⁻²]/[T⁻¹] = [ML²T⁻¹], which matches angular momentum.

Q2. In an experiment, g is found using g = 4π²L/T². If L has a 1% error and T has a 2% error, what is the maximum error in g?

Answer: 5%. Error in g = 1% + 2 × 2% = 5%. The power of T doubles its contribution.

Q3. The product 2.5 × 3.14 should be reported as:

Answer: 7.9. The exact value is 7.85, but 2.5 has only two significant figures, so the result is rounded to two.

Q4. In a vernier callipers, 10 vernier divisions equal 9 main scale divisions of 1 mm each. What is the least count?

Answer: 0.1 mm. Least count = 1 MSD − 1 VSD = 1 mm − 0.9 mm = 0.1 mm.

Common Traps in This Chapter

Subtracting errors for quantities in the denominator

Forgetting to multiply the relative error by the power

Counting leading zeros as significant

Confusing zero error sign in screw gauge readings

Writing dimensions of frequency as [T] instead of [T⁻¹]

Solve the Full Set of PYQs

Reading solved examples builds understanding, but only practice builds speed.
